Resources for Open Circle Worship Leaders

In the two sections below, leaders of worship in the Open Circle can find resources to assist in planning the liturgy and in preparing the reflection and discussion.

If you know a resource that isn't listed here and you think it should be, please speak to Rev. Brad.

Working Preacher

This resource from Luther Seminary has a database of reflections on the Sunday lectionary that includes the current year and an extensive collection of past years. You can choose reflections on any of the four readings appointed for a Sunday.

Sermon Writer

This is a collection of sermons from over 30 preachers. It is organized by book of the Bible, so it needs a bit more searching to find a reflection for the Sunday lectionary (start by clicking on "Sermons" in the menu). It also has a handy hymn index sorted by books of the Bible to help with hymn choices.

Anglicans Online

A collection of links to other preaching resources from around the Anglican Communion. Some are more historical sermons while others are more up-to-date. Note that this page has not been updated since 2019 so some links may be broken.

Salt Project

This storytelling company produces short videos that are high quality and generally fit themes that speak to a more progressive Christian audience. They do not follow the lectionary so resources have to be found through searching. Note that most of the resources are not free.

The Book of Alternative Services

This is one of two official prayer books of the Anglican Church of Canada. There are litanies and prayers on pages 110-129 and pages 671-2. In the list of occasional prayers that begins on page 675 may be found inspiration to craft the petitions of a litany.

Leading Prayer Through Intercession: A Guide

This helpful webpage from the Church of England gives pointers on how to write intercessions.

Prayers of the People by Deacon Ormonde Plater

This late deacon of the Episcopal Church write basic litanies for Sundays and Holy Days in all three years of the lectionary cycle with the intent that intercessors would expand the petitions with the current needs and concerns of the congregation.

In the parish library there are several books and binders with sample intercessions and helpful instruction on how to craft them. Ellen Seddon also has a book of prayers that you might ask to borrow.
